Book The World of Tom Clancy's The Division Review :

There are a handful of games in my life that just grab me and don’t let go. It started with Medal of Honor and Call of Duty (WWII line), S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and now The Division. These games didn’t just allow me to play a game, but gave me a sense of touring existing environments with an added sense of realism. The Division/Division 2 took things up a notch with their unprecedented attention to replicating the cites of NYC and Washington DC to scale and implementing a disaster-themed scenario with a compelling story. The WORLD OF TOM CLANCY offers a hardcover book that gives you the story behind the game’s presentation of a devastated NYC and DC, but you’re paying for the packaging more than the book. It’s important to know what comprises this limited edition. A 160 page hardcover book and a folded cloth game poster are enclosed in a “book box” with a flip open top. The front of the “book box” has an orange cutout Division “bird” logo on the front. When you flip the top of the box to access the book, the orange logo lights up. I’m sure the fancy box and the fact that only 2500 copies of this product are available are reason for the higher cost … the book itself is not. Please note that the source of the light is a wire that somewhat protrudes when you flip the lid and kind of gives you the impression that pulling it will trigger the light on/off … it does not! Don’t tug on the object, you may ruin what you paid for (glad I figured this out before damaging my purchase). If you are a fan of the Division and know the story behind the game, the book offers nothing new. It is presented as a story with chapters dedicated to explaining the events and characters behind the game you are playing. While the majority of the book is dedicated to the initial Division game, it does manage to smoothly incorporate Division 2 and Washington DC as a continuation of the story. In reality, the entire story IS provided by both games, so you don’t need this book to understand the story, just play Division 1 first and simply pay attention to the reasons you’re completing those missions and tasked to collect all those comms and ECHOs. While it is certainly more fun to get the story through gameplay, you must be focused to do so (hard to follow a story when your main purpose of gameplay is to kill the NPCs and complete a mission/task). From this standpoint, the book works as it fills the gaps and removes the need to puzzle bits and pieces of the game together in order to fully understand what the game is all about. What the book does not do, unfortunately, is provide that encyclopedia-like resource that I want. I have a Zelda encyclopedia that provides explicit detail on every enemy, resource, weapon and anything else you can imagine from every edition of the game. I can sit down with that Zelda encyclopedia and reminisce playing the old Zelda games or just appreciate the gradual development of recurring things in the game over the last 30 years. This book misses the mark in that department. It tells the story and provides artwork and even some very basic profile pages of prominent characters (many that only cover half a page). You get the basics of the story and not much more. There is plenty of non-essential filler items that serve no purpose, like basic descriptions of weapons (LMG, SMG, etc.) with a single depiction of one example. There is no real in-depth explanation to enhance your gaming experience, just enough to let you understand what the game is about. The images in the book are artistic shots taken from gameplay and artist renderings of characters and events. What I would have liked to have seen in this book was a comprehensive encyclopedic presentation of all-things Division to this point (yes, it is understood that further developments in the game would render such a volume incomplete, but the first game is “finis” and they could have presented everything from that game in an encyclopedic manner. I’m sure a book with chapters dedicated to factions, weapons, gear/equipment, missions, locations, etc. with pictures would be well-received. Imagine seeing a presentation of every named NPC and a brief story behind them, along with details of locations, missions, etc.. Let’s face it, such a book would be for dedicated Division fans only … this book is for fans as well, it just doesn’t deliver much.If you are a fan of the game (as I am), this book may be worth the purchase from a collectible standpoint only. The light-up bookcase is cool (while it lasts), but this (along with the limited publishing) is what explains the higher cost. Other than that, do not expect too much from the book itself or even the cloth poster for that matter. For a more exciting/interesting book on the Division, I would recommend “New York Collapse” as it offers a unique perspective of one of the game’s characters and is presented in a diary format (as if it was discovered in the ruins of NYC).
There's a great assortment of artwork and information regarding The Division technology, locations, and characters. Perhaps it's unfair to criticize, but it lacks any significant contribution to the universe. Regular players will already have been exposed to much of the information in the book. That aside, terrific quality and artwork. Could be a great coffee table addition to show prospective new Agents.
